Statement:
My artwork challenges visual perception of everyday spaces by
revealing
the overlooked nooks and crannies of the city. It looks
at places people don't usually observe and transforms them into
objects for observation - paintings. My subject matter focuses on
the average, the nothing special and perhaps, where you would
rather not.
I am interested in the role seeing plays in revelation and
transformation. Making this work allows me to reveal the “invisible”
in the landscape - a way of calling attention to our surroundings.
Through this recognition of place we can begin to question our
relationship to the environment and also our role in its
nourishment or demise.
Above all, my work expresses a deep commitment to the
language of painting. I engage in a variety of painting and
drawing techniques; from dripping paint to hobby art rendering
to sewing. The artworks incorporate many low art or craft
tendencies alongside traditional fine art applications. This supports
my desire for material variety and innovation while also adding a
sense of detailed beauty and a bit of the unexpected.
